KeywordsUmpqua River Basin, Brown Juga = Juga spp.. aquatic invertebrates, molluscs, gastropods, taxonomy, genetics, molecular biology
NotesNew techniques in molecular biology have revolutionized invertebrate taxonomy. Many families and genera have been reorganized. This article represents a beginning examination of the freshwater snails in the genus Juga. Emphasis is on the Sacramento River, but a genetic analysis was done on 103 specimens, including some from Oregon. The authors find that much of the classification of Juga is questionable, and that the clades identified “correspond closely to geography. Some geographically and genetically distinctive populations do not fit in any named species.” (from the Abstract)
