Notes | On January 16, 1974, thanks to heavy rainfall on already saturated soil, an almost instantaneous catastrophic landslide took place near Canyonville. Although the area of the landslide was relatively small at only 15,000 cubic yards, a telephone repair crew was working on a coaxial cable in the area, and nine people were killed in the slide. The slide temporarily blocked Canyon Creek, which was already near flood stage. Much of the slide sediment was washed away by the creek. |
