NotesThis article examines the recent history of sediment deposition off the mouth of the Umpqua River, and attempts to explain the observed deposits. The offshore deposit is defined and related to deposition at the mouths of the Columbia and Eel Rivers. There was a 2-to-4 times increase in the rate of sediment deposition in themed-1960s, which is related to increased logging from 1945 forward. Deposition is also related to regional climate factors, such as the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and wave heights. Maps, charts and tables are included.
