NotesIssued in the Annual Reports of the War Department. Pagination is that of the War Dept. report. In 1885, a plan was adopted to have a channel in the Umpqua River of at least 50 feet in depth, and extending for 26 miles. The work was done by the time of this report, with the exception of the removal of some rock ledges near Scottsburg. “Just below Scottsburg, the head of navigation, the Umpqua River is obstructed by five sandstone bars or ledges, separated by pools of about 150 feet. “ (p.3379) 500 cubic yards of rock still had to be removed. This report summarizes finances for the project and gives brief reports on river traffic and commerce.
