NotesOn March 18, 2010, NMFS listed the southern population segment of Pacific smelt as "threatened." This report reviews the biology and status of Pacific smelt to show how this conclusion was reached. In Oregon, aside from Columbia River fisheries, smelt still spawn in Tenmile Creek and in the Umpqua River. Includes (p.303-316) a collection of excerpts of newspaper articles from the Eugene Register-Guard from 1969-1989 on smelt fishing in the Umpqua.
