NotesThe Umpqua Estuary is recognized by the National Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area. This is the summary page of data about the Umpqua estuary in the National Audubon Society database. "On a 1/4/1991 USFWS census, 7885 waterfowl (not including coots) were counted in the estuary. During a 1988-1991 study (Page et al. 1992), 1375 shorebirds were recorded a spring count. Each of these, as well as many personal observations, exceed state thresholds for waterfowl and shorebirds, respectively. The North Spit of the Umpqua River is a designated USFWS Western Snowy Plover Critical Habitat area." Data may be obtained from the IBA website.
