Notes | Coho: The Upper Umpqua had too many hatchery fish spawning, compromising wild runs. Spring Chinook: in 2004, 17% of spawning Chinook salmon in the North Umpqua were of hatchery origin. The Umpqua River chum salmon run is extinct. Winter steelhead: the South Umpqua has lost 6% of its steelhead habitat. Summer steelhead: "In the North Umpqua, hatchery fractions in natural spawning areas have been 10-35% since 1974. Most hatchery fish that spawn naturally in the North Umpqua do not spawn in the same areas as wild fish." Failed ODFW criterion for independence of wild run from hatchery fish. Pacific lamprey: "Counts at Winchestr Dam on the Umpqua River have decreased from over 40,000 to less than 50." |
