KeywordsAmerican shad = Alosa sapidissima, Anisakis simplex, introduced species, nematodes, parasites, Umpqua River, Willamette River
NotesBecause American shad is an exotic species in the Pacific Northwest, it did not evolve alongside the parasitic nematode Anisakis simples, and did not evolve defenses or resistance to it, and is vulnerable to infection. Willamette River fish were more heavily infected than fish from the Umpqua River. "This introduced exotic fish may be the link bringing what was once an exclusively marine parasite into populations of river otters and other inland or terrestrial mammals within the Pacific Northwest."
