Notes | "The softshell clam population of Umpqua Bay, though still considered good, declined about 60% in abundance between 1961 and 1965... The reason for the decline is unknown at this time, however, the finding of heavy accumulations of wood chips, sticks, and bark on the flats could be a contributing factor. The 1964-65 floods could have contributed much of this debris. Also, one good clam bed has been used as a depository of considerable amounts of spoils from dredging and this undoubtedly has contributed to the decline..." (p.7-8) |
