NotesAt the beginning of the 20th century, the town of Gardiner, 8 miles from the mouth of the Umpqua River, was the industrial hub of the area, boasting a sawmill and a creamery. This document examines a request to deepen the river from the mouth to Gardiner, enabling better shipping. The cost of a jetty, wharf, etc. was judged to be too high. The report gives a good description of the area, shipping statistics, and a list of vessels engaged in commerce.
