NotesSenate Executive Document. Estimate of the cost to make the Umpqua navigable from Scottsburg to Roseburg is given as "about $22,500." Includes report of survey of 1870. A "small stern-wheel steamboat ... had, during this year ... ascended the river from Scottsburg, 25 miles from its mouth, to Roseburg, a distance by the river of about one hundred and twenty miles; but that the river had such a rapid current, and so many obstructions, that the boat had to be hauled through the rapids by lines, and was six days in getting to Roseburg." Lists and describes rapids on the river. Report also includes study of possible improvements on the Willamette River. Available in Google Books.
