NotesIn August, 1840, Gustavus Hines was part of a party of missionaries under Jason Lee exploring the Umpqua region and making contact with Native Americans. Chapter 6 (p.93-119) describes the trip. "Fifteen miles below the fort, the river rushes over a ledge of rocks in a number of narrow channels, and falling about twenty-five feet in so many rods, forms a fine salmon fishery." (p.101) Hines describes a village of about 100 of the Umpqua people at this location subsisting on salmon.
