KeywordsCoho salmon = Oncorhynchus kisutch, cutthroat trout = Oncorhynchus clarki, juvenile fish, population biology, population count, Smith River, steelhead trout = Oncorhynchus mykiss
NotesSurveyed juvenile salmonids in the Smith River, a tributary of the Umpqua River. Used electrofishing and snorkel surveys to estimate juvenile salmonid abundance and compared the accuracy of the two methods. In sites where both surveys were conducted both methods worked equally well for coho, but electrofishing estimates were higher for steelhead. Either method used alone is likely to lead to underestimating adult populations.
