Notes | When Oregon became a state in 1859, the U.S. government transferred ownership of all the beds of navigable rivers to the new state. By the early 1980s, development along waterways made it necessary to precisely define what parts of streams were navigable, thus this report on the Smith River. The report gives an excellent overview of historic use of the river. Logging complicated the final conclusions, since log booms were historically used in much of the river. Numerous bw photographs. |
