NotesThis Congressional hearing paints an interesting picture of shipping timber on the Oregon Coast just after the end of the Great War. Timber prices were high enough to make shipping by rail economical, and shipping by sea and port activity was suffering. Citizens hoping for development of the Umpqua North Jetty had funded a bond issue, but needed more government support to finish the jetty. The document includes an appendix giving shipping statistics on the Umpqua in 1919.
